If you are responsible for fire prevention, investigation, and/or public education and want to advance your career in the fire service, this program is for you.

NFPA Standards

Meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for fire prevention inspectors, investigators, and public fire educators.

Academic Credentials

Earn an academic credential from an institute with courses accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and the ProBoard®.

This program is designed for self-paced adult learners who want to pursue fire prevention training.

It is primarily open to students who are employed by a fire department, law enforcement agency, and insurance or investigation company.  

Program Strengths

Most courses in this program are accredited by IFSAC and ProBoard®, and are designed to meet the competencies and training established by the National Fire Protection Association for fire prevention inspectors, investigators, and public fire education. 

Outcomes

  1. Function effectively as a Fire Prevention Officer within a fire department or fire safety team.
  2. Provide strong leadership in a fire prevention role or in an entire division.
  3. Perform fire inspections, investigations, education, and training.
  4. Plan and manage fire department resources – personnel, financial, and equipment.
  5. Prepare written reports and communications.
  6. Plan, implement, and evaluate fire department training and prevention programs.

What You Need to Graduate

The program consists of 22 courses, totaling 30 credits. Students who successfully complete all the courses will receive the Fire Prevention Officer Certificate.

Program Format

Courses are offered either online or in a classroom.

Online course offerings must be completed within the stated period of time, generally within one month from the start date of the course.

Q: When are the °®¶¹´«Ã½ NFPA 1021 Completion Certificates issued?

A: They are printed and mailed to graduates every quarter. If you do not receive your certificate, contact our Fire & Safety Division.

Q: How do I update my student profile?

A: If you want to update your student profile, visit the Student Record Forms page. Here you can find information on how to change your name and contact information. You can also learn how to access authorization to release student information, transcripts, and more.

Q: Can I use my ICS Canada for °®¶¹´«Ã½ Fire Officer ICS course requirements?

A: Yes. Visit the Emergency Management Division (EMD) ICS-recognized providers  page to apply for transfer credits. 

Q: Can I take individual courses without being enrolled in the program?

A: No. Exceptions may be considered for specific cases. Email FirePrevention@jibc.ca for more information.

Q: Why can't I register for FIRE-1100 online?

A: You must be enrolled in the FO/FPO Program and verified by the °®¶¹´«Ã½ Registration Office before you can register for FIRE-1100 online.

Q: Can I apply course credentials from other providers to the °®¶¹´«Ã½ Fire Prevention Officer program?

Q: When do I have access to my online course?

A: You will have access to your online course on the course start date. You can access the course through the my°®¶¹´«Ã½ Portal Welcome Page.

Q: What is °®¶¹´«Ã½'s withdrawal and refund policy?

A: °®¶¹´«Ã½'s withdrawal policy for Fire Officer Continuing Studies courses is, that students have up to seven (7) calendar days before the course starts to request a withdrawal and receive a full refund. Withdrawal in more than seven (7) calendar days from the start of the course is not eligible for a tuition refund.

Contact FirePrevention@jibc.ca and the Registration Office at register@jibc.ca to request a withdrawal and refund. You must contact the Registration Office to formally withdraw from a course to avoid receiving an 'F' fail grade on your transcript.

Q: What is involved with proctoring an exam?

A: The proctor must sign a completed proctor agreement. Proctors are provided with a detailed information package close to the exam date. All exams must be proctored face-to-face with the student and proctor present. Proctors need to be able to clear a cache history on the student's laptop upon completion of the online exam.

Suitable proctors must be from outside the organization/department/employer. Below are examples of who may be a suitable proctor:

  • A high school, university, or college instructor
  • An external professional, such as a city official, who is not associated with your fire department

We have accepted other suitable candidates. Contact us to ensure the proctor will be accepted.

Q: Can IBC proctor my exam?

A: Yes. Proctoring can be accommodated at most °®¶¹´«Ã½ Campuses. Contact FirePrevention@jibc.ca for more information.

Q: Are there financial aid options available for students in this program?

A: Yes. Students accepted into the program have access to and are encouraged to apply for external and internal student awards, scholarships, and bursaries.

Q: Are international students eligible to take this program?

A: Yes. International students should contact the Office of International Affairs to discuss their options and requirements to apply for and complete the program.
