°®¶¹´«Ã½ firefighter training

Is this program right for you?

This program is for current members of the fire service who want to become full-service, operations-level firefighters. It is open to fire service personnel only.

This program is only available to members of the fire service who need the skills and knowledge to meet the British Columbia Fire Service Minimum Training Standards set by the BC Office of the Fire Commissioner.

Program Strengths

This program provides fire service members with the knowledge and skills to perform full-service fire suppression activities.

The program allows departments to show that their firefighters have firefighting skills that exceed the British Columbia Fire Service Minimum Training Standards. 

What you need to graduate

This program consists of 12 courses. 

Students have 12 months to complete a course from the date of registration. They also have up to three years (36 months) to complete all the courses in the program to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Program Format

We deliver the courses through an in-house training model that involves a mix of online and in-person courses. The in-person courses take place at a °®¶¹´«Ã½ campus or designated firefighter training facility in the community.

There are no application deadlines or set start dates. Fire department training officers can submit program applications for their members anytime. 

Exams & Evaluations

Online Final Theory Examination

Online final theory examinations must be requested for each student by the department training officer (or department designate) and must be proctored. Students must be registered in the course before training officers can request the exams. Students must complete all FIRE-1057 Knowledge Quizzes before taking the final exam.

Students must achieve a minimum passing grade of 60% on all quizzes and the final theory exam.

Fire departments can register their members by submitting the group knowledge final exam request form for fire departments. 

Individuals (general public/industry/non-fire department staff) can register via the knowledge final exam request form for individuals.

Practical Skills Evaluations

Skills Evaluation requests are only available to students currently registered in FIRE-1058.

Skills Evaluations must be requested for each student by the department training officer (or department designate) and must be evaluated by a °®¶¹´«Ã½-certified evaluator. 

Each student must achieve a minimum passing grade of 75% in a selection of mandatory and randomly selected skills.

Textbooks & Supplies

We will supply course manuals when students attend class. If additional books or other materials are required, we will let students know after they are accepted into the program.

STEP one - Determine Eligibility

This program is open to fire service personnel only. Prerequisites are based on fire department criteria. The training officer or department designate must register students.

An application fee of $75 will be charged per student for the level of service training requested (Exterior, Interior OR Full Service).

We will waive this fee if a student is already registered in the Basic, FFI or FFI & II.

There is no additional application fee for students (with the intent to train) who have already been registered in the Exterior Firefighter Operations Program.

STEP three - Register for Courses

After submitting the program application form, students can register for courses by completing the course registration form and submitting it to vocationalfftc@jibc.ca.

If you don’t have a °®¶¹´«Ã½ number for your students, you can still submit the form, ensuring you have filled in the DOB field.  

Allow up to 14 business days to complete the course registration process.

Training officers must submit their members' program application form to the Admissions office with a $75 application fee per student (if applicable).

Q: How long do I have to complete a course?

A: Students have 12 months to complete a course from the date of registration.

Q: How long do I have to complete this program?

A: Students have up to three years (36 months) to complete all the courses in the Full Service FireFighter Operations program to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Q: What is the Withdrawal Policy for this program? 

A: There is a $50 non-refundable administrative fee per student from the date of a course registration form is received. The course fees are non-refundable from the date the student and/or the Training Assistant information is emailed. Registration/Course fees are non-transferable.

Upon successful registration, training officers and firefighting students will receive an email with directions on how to access their courses. Once registered into FIRE-1057, FIRE-1058, and/or FIRE-1059, students will have 12 months to complete the course.

Q: What are the start dates?

A: For course registration requests received between the 1st and the 15th of the month, the course start date will be the 1st of the following month.

For course registration requests received between the 16th and the last day of the month, the course start date will be the 15th of the following month.

Q: When are the Program Completion Certificates issued?

A: °®¶¹´«Ã½ Certificates of Completion for Fire & Safety Division (FSD) programs are printed and mailed out to graduates on a quarterly basis. Certificates are produced in February, May, August, and November for students who have completed the program in the relevant preceding three-month period. If you do not receive your certificate, contact FSD at fire@jibc.ca.
